Review the list of files. Click on the one that says "options" (It should be a .txt type).

Look at the multiple settings that you can change. Find the setting that says "gamma".

Change the numbers next to gamma to be as high as you want. When you're done, save and exit the file and the folder.

The version of the launcher is irrelevant. It's done in game by going into the settings page and adjusting gamma under 'video settings.'

It does work, just open the menu> video setting and there you will find the brightness option.

On a mac you may have to go into the spot-light search in the upper right corner of your monitor and search type in, "~//Library", then go into application support to find the minecraft folder.
